Jan 21, 2026
9-10am PT | 12-1pm ET
Speaker:
Francisco J Martinez, MA
Children’s Mercy Kansas City
Description
Building trust with patients and families is essential to delivering effective, equitable care, especially across cultural and language differences. In this webinar, Francisco Martinez shares real-world lessons from culture and language coaching at Children’s Mercy, highlighting how intentional communication practices can strengthen relationships with patients and families.
Drawing from hands-on experience, this session explores how trust is built (or broken) in everyday clinical interactions, the role of cultural humility and language access, and practical strategies teams can use to create more inclusive, respectful, and patient-centered care environments.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Identify at least two common trust-building challenges that arise in cross-cultural and cross-language patient interactions, based on real examples from pediatric care settings.
- Attitude: Cultural and Language Humility, health literacy knowledge and skills are not enough
- Culture: Socializing and Personalizing
- Describe three practical strategies used in culture and language coaching that help clinicians and staff build trust with patients and families from diverse backgrounds.
- Mirroring language: Use the words your patients’ caregivers use.
- Working with Interpreters: Keep using plain language, using shorter sentences, explaining just one item and confirm understanding, and have a meaningful pre-session with interpreters.
- Intentional Listening and Self-Teach Back: Listen carefully, give your patient and their caregivers time to talk, make notes about what is important, summarize information to confirm your understanding and modeling Teach-Back to your patients and their caregivers.
- Apply at least one trust-building communication approach discussed in the session to their own professional role or healthcare setting within the next 30 days.
