Workshop: Improvising Access: Embodied Tools for Adaptive Health Communication

Speaker: Jesse Greenfield, MPH, CHES
Speaker Bio: Jesse Greenfield, MPH, CHES (they/them) is a public health educator and improviser living in San Diego, California. They love using storytelling as an information-sharing tool to empower individuals and communities to live their fullest and healthiest lives. As co-founder and lead facilitator of Kaleidoscope Training Center, Jesse facilitates applied improvisation workshops to support communities, medical professionals, youth, and more in improving their spoken and unspoken communication with others, creating joyful connections, and being effective advocates for themselves and their communities.
Summary: Adaptability is essential to co-creating accessible health information and learning environments. In this applied improvisation workshop, participants will engage in evidence-based, playful activities that build psychological safety and inclusion while practicing plain-language communication tailored to the people in the room. Through guided reflection, we’ll translate embodied insights into practical strategies for real-world health literacy challenges. Participants will leave with increased confidence and concrete tools to adapt language in the moment—making communication more accessible, compassionate, and responsive to diverse audiences.
Learning Objectives: After attending this session, attendees will be able to:
- Demonstrate adaptable communication strategies in response to diverse audience needs and contexts.
- Apply principles of psychological safety and accessibility to create more inclusive learning and communication environments, both virtually and in-person.
- Translate embodied insights from applied improvisation activities into actionable approaches to health literacy challenges.

Workshop: 3 C’s for Effective Teamwork: Connection, Collaboration, & Communication

Speaker: Dayna Gowan, MPH, CHES
Speaker Bio: Dayna Gowan is a speaker, workshop facilitator, improviser, public speaking coach, Distinguished Toastmaster, and Host of the Improvly Speaking Podcast, which focuses on improv, public speaking, communication, and creativity. She helps speakers find the fun in public speaking and embrace the improvised moments on and off stage. Her mission is to make all meetings, presentations, workshops, whether online or in-person, fun and engaging for all attendees! Dayna has her Master of Public Health degree from the University of South Carolina.
Summary: In this highly interactive session, we will focus on 3 elements of effective teamwork: connection, collaboration, and communication (and maybe some bonus C’s will come up too!) Attendees will participate in experiential learning exercises and be encouraged to let go of perfection and show up as their authentic selves. Attendees will be able to zoom out and see how the exercises and structure of this workshop fostered their own sense of connection and belonging within our group, as well as how they can bring these skills back to their role in working with external teams and groups.
Health Literacy and Public Health Professionals can use these skills to work better with clients, stakeholders, their internal teams, etc. In this remote or hybrid working world, it can sometimes feel hard to connect and engage with people. We’re expected to have all the “soft” skills needed to be good team players and leaders. This workshop will help present some of these “soft” skills in a memorable way, and they will get to practice using these skills, instead of just talking about them in a webinar-type of format
Learning Objectives:
- Attendees will acquire at least one strategy to build inclusive environments and teams that foster the three C’s – connection, collaboration and communication.
- Attendees will collaborate with other team members to understand the importance of a yes, and… mindset (or growth mindset) for improved leadership and teambuilding.
- Attendees will practice these teamwork skills in fun, low-stakes exercises and debrief as a group to reflect on the importance, application, and relevance to their work.

Continuing Education
Each workshop offers 1 continuing education credit/contact hour for eligible participants.
- Attend one workshop and earn 1 credit/contact hour
- Attend both workshops and earn up to 2 credits/contact hours total
To receive continuing education credit, participants must attend the workshop live, remain for the entire educational activity, and complete the required evaluation. Continuing education credit is not available for recorded or on-demand viewing.
CHES®/MCHES® Continuing Education
The Institute for Healthcare Advancement is a designated provider of continuing education contact hours (CECH) in health education by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc.
Each workshop is designated for Certified Health Education Specialists (CHES®) and Master Certified Health Education Specialists (MCHES®) to receive 1 Category I continuing education contact hour.

The Institute for Healthcare Advancement is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing as a continuing education provider, CEP No. 11933.
Each workshop is approved for 1 contact hour. California registered nurses who complete both workshops may earn up to 2 contact hours total.
