Content Guidelines and Design Tips (for the final poster)

When creating your final poster, these guidelines will help you create a professional, accessible presentation.

Your poster should visually communicate your work and reflect IHA’s mission to improve health literacy and promote health equity. Include the following elements:

  • Title
  • Acknowledgment of contributors
  • Introduction: What you did
  • Design/Methods: How you did it
  • Results: What you found
  • Conclusion: What you learned
  • Connection to IHA’s Mission: How your work supports health literacy and/or health equity
  • Informative graphics: Charts, graphs, illustrations, or photos that enhance understanding

Design Tips

Create your poster in PowerPoint using a 36″ x 48″ slide. Organize content left to right, top to bottom, using columns or bullet points.

Use visuals to highlight key insights. Keep charts and figures clear, labeled, and close to related text.

Use simple, readable sans-serif fonts (e.g., Arial, Calibri, or Verdana) and maintain consistent sizes throughout your poster:

  • Title: 36–72 pt
  • Headings: 24–36 pt
  • Body text: 18–24 pt
  • Captions: 14–18 pt

Left-align body text and keep line spacing between 1.15–1.5 for easy on-screen reading.

Use a simple, professional color scheme with strong contrast between text and background for easy on-screen reading.

  • Limit your design to no more than four colors (two main, one accent, one neutral).Use color consistently to organize content and draw attention to key points.Avoid neon or overly bright colors and ensure accessibility for people with color-vision differences (e.g., avoid red/green contrasts).
  • Light backgrounds with dark text generally display best on screens.

Review Criteria

Poster abstracts will be reviewed based on relevance, clarity, impact, and innovation.

Reviewers will consider:

  • Relevance: How well the topic aligns with health literacy and/or health equity.
  • Clarity: How clearly the abstract describes its purpose, approach, and key insights.
  • Impact: The potential value or application of the work in advancing the field.
  • Innovation: The originality or creativity of the approach, idea, or solution.
